Restructuring of Indian manufacturing industry in the post reform period an interstate analysis

Abstract

The study examined the pattern of spatial and technological restructuring of Indian manufacturing industry across major Indian states over a period of last four decades and identified the underlying factors influencing the emerging industrial changes in the post-reform period. The results reveal that liberalisation has not produced uniform benefits across regions in India. Furthermore, the manufacturing sector has been experiencing capital deepening in the post-reform period, reflected in terms of growing capital intensity per worker. The change is shaped by a range of economic and non-economic factors. A nuanced understanding of these shifts warrants policy interventions to address uneven industrialisation among Indian states. newline
