Abstract

Rand#257;ga is a melodic entity that forms the crux of Karnatak Music. The fundamental principles of rand#257;gas stem from its sound classification system that has evolved over the years. Rand#257;ga classification system that is currently in vogue is one that is based on the notes it takes and its attribution to a scale with the corresponding notes. A rand#257;ga s characteristics could evolve itself with changing times but its melodic edifice, which is its core, remains intact and survives the changes with efflux of time. A rand#257;ga ebbs and flows like a river, in which merge its tributaries inspite of meandering in its path. This study is an earnest attempt to delve deep into the core of a rand#257;ga, its genesis, its evolution and its form in textual and practice traditions. newline
