Abstract
Ayurveda is a blessing to mankind. Principles of Ayurveda are companions at
newlineevery step of life. It evolved with the evolution of mankind. Probably discovery of
newlineAgnitatwa (Fire) is the most productive and historical evolution for mankind. Most
newlineAncient literature Vedas have evidenced the use of the various dietary and medicinal
newlineplants which pinpoint different traditions of dosage forms. The importance of
newlineBheshaj(Medicine) is very well mentioned in Rugveda1.
newline Bheshaj (Drugs) is the most important Pillar among Chatushpad (Four Pillars)
newlineof Chikitsa2 (Treatment). Although many plant-based drugs and dosage forms are
newlinestated in Veda, exact preparation techniques are scarcely mentioned rather it is not
newlinetermed or defined. Basic categorization of the dosage forms is done in the Samhita
newlineperiod only. Ayurveda has classified these dosage forms as
newlinePanchvidhakashayakalpana (Five Basic dosage forms) in Bhaishjya Kalpana. All
newlineplant based formulations are categorized under Bhaishjya Kalpana which literally
newlinemeans different forms of the formulation.
