Abstract
Erythrocytes are frequently required in clinic and its critical
newlinetherapeutic properties are utilized in treating trauma, critically ill and
newlinepreoperative patients. Transfused RBCs are expected to deliver oxygen to
newlinetissues and cells via blood flow through the circulatory system. Production of
newlinean artificial RBC remains myth till to date. Thus, the only and prime source of
newlineRBCs is human volunteers. Therefore, the supply of stored RBC in blood
newlinebank systems becomes vulnerable to many conditions. Our recent experience
newlineof the COVID pandemic situation made the issue worse. As per the guideline,
newlineblood from a person, who tested positive and recovered from the disease, can
newlinebe collected only after 28 days of the discharge from the hospital or 28 days
newlineafter the end of the home isolation. These restrictions exert tremendous
newlinepressure on the supply of stored blood and RBCs. Hence, it is necessary to use
newlineoptimal storage methods to preserve RBCs that extends RBC life in blood
newlinebank system.
newlinePreservation and deposition of blood and blood components in a
newlineblood bank are always related with the storage lesion , which includes
newlinemorphological and metabolic changes, protein damage, and membrane
newlinedis-integrity. The interval between the donation and the transfusion is a
newlinecritical issue since the time of storage positively correlates with the rate of
newlinehemolysis. The maximum accepted shelf life of RBC is 42 days in the US and
newline35 days in many European countries. The standard storage buffer used for
newlineboth RBC and whole blood is CPDA (Citrate, Phosphate, Dextrose and
newlineAdenine) which conserves the blood and its components.
