dc.description.abstractABSTRACT: newlineBACKGROUND: Dental caries is one of the most common diseases of the newlineoral cavity. Restoration of the decayed tooth followed by full coronal newlinerestorations remained as one of the treatment options. Preformed stainless newlinesteel crowns are the widely practiced full coverage restorations but are unable newlineto satisfy the esthetic demands. To address this issue, various esthetic newlinecrowns have been developed among which zirconia crowns are known for newlinetheir superior durability, biocompatibility and esthetic appearance. newlineAIM: To evaluate and compare the clinical and radiographic success of the newlinenewly introduced Kids-e-zirconia crowns against the SSC in primary newlinemandibular molars using split mouth randomised trials. newlineMATERIALS AND METHODS: Using split mouth study, stainless steel crown newline(n=19) and Kids-e-Zirconia (n=19) crown were given bilaterally to the same newlinepatient. The clinical performance was assessed via oral hygiene, gingival newlinehealth, tooth wear, marginal adaptation and surface roughness. Through newlineradiographic means, quality of the crown and interproximal bone level was newline9 newlineevaluated at the baseline (at the time of the crown cementation) with a 3 newlinemonth follow-up. newlineRESULTS: At the baseline level, OHI scores differ when compared between newlinethe crowns at baseline level and after 3 months they were significantly newlinedifferent from each other (p=0.02), with zirconia crowns being superior to SSC newlinein terms of oral hygiene. Gingival health showed a mild difference between the newlinetwo groups, however it was not of any significant level (p=0.08). Marginal newlineadaptation and surface roughness showed no difference at the baseline level newlinethroughout the follow up period. SSC and zirconia demonstrated similar tooth newlinewear in our study, with longer duration of follow up. Interproximal bone level newlinewas similar between the two groups. newlineCONCLUSION: Clinical performance of zirconia and stainless steel crowns newlinewas equally good.
