newlineBackground: Acinetobacters are significant nosocomial pathogens. Surgical-site
newlineinfections, urinary tract infections, ventilator-associated pneumonia and bacteremia are
newlinesome notable infections caused by them, especially in Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
newlinepatients. Multi-drug-resistant and pan-drug resistant phenotypes in Acinetobacter
newlinespecies are of great concern because they exhibit resistance to several classes of
newlineantibiotics thereby limiting the therapeutic options. The worrying trend of carbapenem
newlineresistance in A. baumannii owing to the acquisition of a variety of resistance
newlinemechanisms is a global concern. In view of the increasing bacterial resistance, regular
newlinemonitoring of resistance patterns is necessary to improve guidelines for empirical
newlineantibiotic therapy.
newlineAIM and OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the blaOXA-23 gene in carbapenem-resistant
newlineAcinetobacter spp. isolated from various clinical samples. To Identify and isolate
newlineAcinetobacter species from various clinical samples. To detect antibiotic susceptibility
newlineprofile of isolated organisms i.e., Acinetobacter species. To detect Carbapenem
newlineresistance by isolated Acinetobacter species bacteria and detection of blaOXA-23 gene
newlinein isolated organism.
newlineMATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study was carried out and a total of
newline287 samples were collected and included in the study. Bacterial isolation and
newlineidentification was done by Grams staining, Cultural characteristics on Blood agar and
newlineMacConkey s agar plate. Species were identified by biochemical tests. Antibiotic
newlinesusceptibility test was performed by Kirby Bauer Disc diffusion method.
newlineCarbapenemase production was screened by mCIM test and confirmed by the
newlineModified Hodge test. BlaOXA-23 gene was detected by PCR.
newlineResult: The distribution of isolates was, Acinetobacter b
