Abstract
AIM
newlineTo compare the osseointegration potential of Pure
newlinePEEK and Medical grade sulfonated PEEK.
newlineMATERIALS AND METHODS
newlinePEEK cylinders of Regular PEEK and PEEK Optima
newlinecylinders were cut down with thicknesses of 2 mm and
newlinediameters of 15 mm with the help of a diamond cutter. All
newlinePEEK samples were ultrasonically washed with deionized
newlinewater, acetone and ethanol by turns. To optimize
newlinesulfonation times, five serial sulfonation times were set, 0
newlinemin (MPEEK), 2 min (SPEEK2), 4 min (SPEEK4), 6 min
newline(SPEEK6) and 8 min (SPEEK8), with untreated PEEK as
newlinethe control. Medical grade PEEK discs were immersed
newlineinto concentrated sulfuric acid (95 98wt. %) under
newlinemagnetic stirring at room temperature for different
newlinesulfonation times to prepare sulfonated PEEK. At the end
newlineof each time point, all SPEEK samples with different
newlinesulfonation times were rinsed with acetone for 10 mins,
newlinewashed with deionized water for 10 mins under magnetic
newlinestirring and finally dried at 37°C. All the samples were
newlinesealed in sterile containers.
newlineRESULTS
newlineThere is a significant difference (plt0.05) in porosity,
newlinesurface roughness, wettability, cell viability and cell count
newlinein between sulfonated PEEK and Regular peek.
newlineCONCLUSION
newlineThe present study reveals the use of the sulfonation
newlineprocess on PEEK, creates efficient surface modifications.
newlineMedical grade PEEK with 6 mins sulfonation is highly
newlineefficient and statistically significant (Plt0.05) it has shown
newlineefficient porous structure ranging from 1.628µm to
newline2.446µm, less residual sulfur content, moderate surface
newlineroughness (1.391±0.004), increased hydrophilic property
newline(61.50°±1.085°), favorable cytocompatibility, increased
newlinecell count at 24hrs, 48hrs and 72hrs
