Unravelling druggable genetic targets to reprofile FDA approved drugs against Alzheimers disease

Abstract

Alzheimer s Disease (AD), a progressive, irreversible neurodegenerative disorder, affecting the elderly, characterized by dementia and disruptive cognitive functioning, represents one of the highest unmet medical requirements. Neuropathological evidence shows that AD is characterized by the presence of Amyloid Beta (Aand#946;) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the hippocampal and cortical regions blocking the synaptic transmission leading to neuronal death. Although there are various complex pathophysiological theories explaining the role of numerous genes and proteins in AD, there exists an arena of genetic bedrocks leading to disruption in regulatory activities resulting in AD progression. Nonetheless the existence of countless genetic evaluations, inconsistencies among various ethnicities contribute to a lacuna in unravelling crucial disease-specific targets opening avenues for exploratory research. newline
