Abstract

After the acknowledgements and the table of contents the introduction discusses the geolinguistics of Assamese, and mentions some of the theory-based works on the language. These are followed by an outline of the theoretical framework govern-ing the linguistic analysis presented in this thesis. Chapter One discusses the Assamese Phonetics and Phonology and contains an explaination of the notations and conventions used. Chapter Two provides an analysis of the largest syntactic structure - the sentence and introduces the grammatical units - the clause, the group, the word and the morpheme in that order. All the grammatical units are defined and subcategorized in terms of their structure and function. Chapter Three is concerned with the structure of the verb phrase in terms of constituent composition and exhibits the various basic verb patterns. Chapter Four defines and subcategorizes verbs in terms of constituent compositions, syntactic behaviour and morphological scatters. Chapter Five is a discussion of the grammar of Verbs in terms of colligations with noun phrases age object nominals. Chapter Six is an exposition of the grammar of the syntactic category of Voice. Chapter Seven discusses the linguistics of Time, Tense and Aspect in Assamese. Chapter Eight embodies a study of Negativization and Interrogativization in Assamese. Chapter Nine defines and subcategorizes the Adverbs in Assamese. Chapter Ten is the grammar and sociolinguistics of the Particles in Assamese.
