dc.description.abstractBreast Cancer (BC), a systemic disease, starts as a local disease, but become metastasized by spreading to the lymph nodes and distant organs. Molecular mechanism of metastasis consists of a sequence of complex cascades involving cancer cell migration, loss of adhesion and invasion. Conventional therapy for controlling BC is surgery and/or radiotherapy, and regular treatment by adjuvant chemo-or hormonal therapies. Metastatic breast cancer is accountable for the majority of causes of breast cancer-related deaths, either directly due to tumor participation of vital organs or indirectly due to adverse side effects of therapy to manage growth and spread of the tumor. These factors indicate the need for novel therapies effective against breast cancer. In the exploration for new chemotherapies, plants are considered to be an excellent source for natural therapies that may have less adverse side effects. Hence, there is a renewed interest in investigating phytocompounds that may be used to treat breast cancer. newlineIn the current study, phytocompounds were studied for their ability to inhibit matrix metalloproteinase-1(MMP-1), a key zinc-containing metalloenzyme involved in degradation of collagen and in the development of a metastatic phenotype in breast cancer. Inhibition of MMP-1 protein prevents the spread of tumor cells in later stages and may also aid in treating the early stages of BC. This was accomplished through in-silico studies and validated using in-vitro experimental methods. newline
