dc.description.abstractThis thesis deals with the problem of wave interaction with horizontal and inclined loose sediment beds and fixed beds. The study particularly focuses on systematically investigating the formation, growth, and migration of small amplitude ripples, patch development progression, and growth mechanisms for different sand sizes and wave frequencies. This study also examined the suspended sediment characteristics as wave cycles increase and analysed their influence on sediment transport and turbulence characteristics. The concluding section of the thesis specifically examined the evolution of waves, the phenomenon of wave breaking, and the transition of energy along a sloping bed. Understanding the effect of surface waves is not only important from a scientific point of view but also finds a wide range of applications in hydraulic, ocean and coastal engineering. A plunger-type wave maker was used to generate surface waves along the unidirectional turbulent current. The wave-maker was designed and fabricated at the Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics Laboratory (FMHL) workshop of the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, India, and is installed at the upstream end of the flume to generate surface waves. The velocity data were collected using a three-dimensional (3-D) micro-acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV). Instantaneous real-time data on the time variation of bed morphology was measured by 24 submersible 2 MHz Ultrasonic ranging system (URS), SeaTek Inc. newlineWithin the framework of the present research program, a total of three different sets of experiments were conducted in order to investigate three unique concerns.
