From the prenatal period through adulthood, nutrition is crucial for brain development. Our nutritional intake directly affects how our brains develop and work, which in turn has impact on our cognitive, emotional, and behavioural abilities. The significance of a healthy diet for optimal brain health and development has been significantly highlighted by recent research. This has been observed that some specific nutrients and dietary habits enhance cognitive performance and lower the risk of neurological disorders. newline newline It has been found that some nutrients can improve the potential of brain development by facilitating the modification of important gene structure and influencing the expression of genetic factors. These include protein, fats, iron, vitamin A, choline, folate, phytosterols, flavonoids etc. However, the effect of these nutrients depends on their timing, doses and duration. It is pertinent to mention here that nutrients have their own area of action in the brain and thus has area specific effects on the hippocampus and the cortex. Early nutritional inadequacies can have long-lasting implications on behaviour, mental health, and cognitive performance. newline newlinePhytosterols and Flavonoids are a class of plant-derived compounds which are widely found in traditional medicines, functional foods, and nutraceuticals. They have the capacity to pass the blood brain barrier (BBB) and build up in the brain.
