Abstract

newlineCotton Gossypium spp is the mainstay of economy and social status of global farmers In India cotton is an important cash crop and it has the largest world cotton cultivation area Major cotton area is covered by hybrid cotton especially Gossypium hirsutum L which contributes to more than 90 per cent of the countrys cotton production Male sterility is an effective and economical pollination control system in the production of hybrid seeds In most crops two line Genic Male Sterility and three-line breeding system Cytoplasmic Male sterility have been effectively followed in hybrid seed production however Genic male sterility GMS system has several advantages over the conventional Cytoplasmic Male Sterility CMS system as it does not require any maintainer and restorer lines for developing hybrids Genic male sterility is one of the most important economic traits for cotton G hirsutum L as it avoids a laborious hand emasculation process in hybrid seed production Even though 19 GMS genes have been reported so far the GMS trait conferred by two recessive alleles ms5 and ms6 in homozygous condition have been widely utilized for cotton hybrid seed production in India as it is stable in different environments
