Evaluation of efficacy of virechana in polycystic Ovarian syndrome
Abstract
Background:
newlinePolycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder that affects
newlineapproximately 3 7 % of women with a leading cause of infertility.
newline
newlineThe pathophysiology of the
newlinedisease involves multisystem dysfunction, namely reproduction, endocrine and metabolic.
newlineThe various risks like endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial cancer, insulin resistance /
newlinetype 2 DM, high blood pressure, dyslipidaemia, cardiovascular disease, strokes, weight gain,
newlinemiscarriages are associated. Allied sciences have been developed with treatments like
newlinehormonal therapy, insulin therapy that meet with high cost and prolonged usage end up with
newlineother metabolic disturbances. These factors made the concern for study and intervention of
newlineAyurveda. This complex disease cannot be included under any specific condition. Rather it
newlinecan be understood as the sannipataja dosha manifestation with samprapti of rasa dushti
newline(insulin resistance), meda dushti (dyslipidemia and adiposity), aavarana of vata (abnormal
newlinehypthalamo-pitutary-ovarian axis) and aaratava dushti (menstrual disorders) with
newlinebheejopaghata (heridetary) as factor. In such conditions, shodhana chikitsa with virechana
newlineconsidered to be the best choice of treatment. Virechana has also been proved efficacious in
newlineinsulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, sthoulya, and at genetic levels. Danti being explained
newlinefor bhedana and teekshana has been selected to establish its clinical efficacy as teekshana
newlinevirechaka. Hence, a clinical study on Virechana with Danti in the patients of PCOS was
newlineplanned with following objectives.
newlineObjectives: The objectives of the study were considered under
