Abstract
Urbanization and climate change have combined effects on land use
newlineand water resources. Urbanization increases population density, which leads to
newlineincrease in the built-up areas, increasing imperviousness. The rise in
newlineimperviousness is the leading cause of floods during high/heavy precipitation.
newlineUrban flood has a severe impact on the Socioeconomic and environment. The
newlinedecrease in infiltration leads to groundwater depletion. Pollution is another major
newlineissue in Metropolitan Cities that reduces surface water and groundwater quality.
newlineIt will also decrease the performance of both the natural and storm drain
newlinenetworks. Climate change and urbanization tend to change the hydrological
newlineparameters in urban regions. Extreme Precipitation events are likely to increase
newlinein all the regions. In addition, the coastal cities receive precipitation from the
newlinecyclones, which increases the risk of flooding in the urban coastal cities. Hence,
newlineurban coastal cities are vulnerable to flooding during monsoon and lack
newlinegroundwater resources during summer. Moreover, it is also necessary to manage
newlinegroundwater resources to reduce the possibility of seawater intrusion.
newlineUrbanization is unavoidable in a developing country to raise its
newlineeconomy and create opportunities for people to improve their social and
newlineeconomic standards. However, urbanization has an impact on water resources
newlineand the environment. Studies related to urbanization and climate changes
newlineshould be carried out to overcome these problems. Chennai City was chosen
newlinein the current study, a metropolitan area often affected by floods and drought.
newlineZone 9, 10 and 11, situated between the Adyar and Cooum rivers, and
newlinecorresponding Wards 116, 132 and 152 are chosen for the micro-level studies.
newlineIn the present study, rainfall analysis was carried out for historical and
newlineprojected data. Rainfall deviations are analyzed using the anomaly index to
newlinefind the dry and wet years.
