Abstract
Fish is one of the man s oldest foods, and because of its importance as a rich source of protein, it is of great nutritional value. At present more than half of the world s population does not get enough protein. In view of the rapid growth of the world s population, it seems advisable to be economical with this important source of very rich, palatable and easily digested protein. The parasites and diseases constitute one of the important factors in regulating the fish population in Pisciculture. To increase fish production, it is necessary that the various contributory factors to mortality of fish are reduced, so that the disease-free fish of good quality is made available to the consumer, but, sufficient attention has not yet been paid to fish diseases and their control in our country. The present investigations have been carried out in the five districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh to assess the current status in the prevalence of fish diseases in the area, study the life cycle patterns of the fish-pathogenic microbes particularly watermoulds and suggest certain effective non-chemical, biological control measures so that disease-free and non-toxic fish may be available to the consumers. In another significant experiment, designed for the first time, the effective biocontrol agent Trichoderma viride has been used to develop Perpetual Bioremediation System (PBS) for perpetual control of fungal and bacterial fish pathogens. In case the PBS system is installed in the fish-culture ponds throughout the Country, I presume, no fish disease will develop (evidenced by the present studies) and, in turn, the fish production will be doubled on global perspective.
