Conservation Induced Displacement and Tribal Livelihood

Abstract

In conclusion, this study outlines the multidimensional impact of conservation induced displacement on the Baiga tribe in Madhya Pradesh, and emphasizes how these changes have affected their socio-economic status, livelihood capital and adaptation strategies. The analysis shows that while displacement presents significant challenges, it can also provide opportunities to improve financial and physical capital. This is consistent with previous research, which suggests that resettlement, when managed effectively, can lead to better access to resources, infrastructure and overall living conditions. newlineHowever, the study also highlights the complexities and compromises involved. The Baiga tribe s dependence on traditional livelihoods, which are closely linked to their natural environment, has been disrupted, necessitating a shift towards diversified income sources. Livelihood diversification emerges as an important strategy for resilience, enabling the community to cope with economic and environmental uncertainties. Despite restrictions, the Baiga continue to access forest resources, reflecting their resilience and adaptability in the face of change. newline newline
