Study of Queueing Models using Control Charts

Abstract

Quality service is the basis for any organization to develop and to survive. Waiting lines with newlinecustomers are the major challenge for the institutions providing service to customers. The Danish newlineMathematician A.K. Erlang invented Queueing theory which provides waysto maintain the system newlineefficiency and Walter A.Shewhart invented the control chartwhichis a graphical technique enables newlineto study how a process changes over time with reference to quality. These two techniques together newlinereduce delay which is the enemy of efficiency and waitingwhich is the enemy of utilization. newlineApplication of control chart technique to queues provide prior idea about expected waiting newlinetime, maximum waiting time and minimum waiting time to the customers and concerns. Therefore newlinecontrol chart technique ensures effective performance of concerns in order to guarantee customer s newlinesatisfaction. newlineIn traditional queueing theory the arrival time and the service time are required to follow newlinecertain probability distributions with fixed parameters. But in many practical situations, the arrival newlinepattern and service pattern are typically described by linguistic terms such as fast, slow or moderate newlinerather than with complete probability distributions. This demands the construction of fuzzy control newlinechart. newlineThe aim of this study is to analyse the performance of certain queueing models using newlineShewhart control chart in crisp and fuzzy environments to enhance the quality of service.
