Development of Life Skills through Different Subject Areas using Situational Learning Approach among Elementary School Students An Experimental Study

Abstract

The development of life skills is an integral part of the holistic development of an newlineindividual. Holistic development which includes life skills development is a key point of newlinediscussion of National Education Policy (2020) (Govt. of India, 2020). It is important to newlinedevelop life skills to address the demands and needs of everyday life, i.e., critical thinking newlineskills, interpersonal relationship skills, negotiation skills, decision-making skills, coping newlineskills, etc. (NCERT, 2005). So, life skills are a combination of skills that make people newlinebehave sincerely. Life skills development positively influences/ assures self-efficacy newline(Reinecke et al., 2003); self-confidence (Kumari, 2016); self-esteem (Vatankhah et al., newline2014); self-respect (Tajalli and Zandi, 2010); self-knowledge (Pick et al., 2003); mental newlinehealth (Karimi et al., 2015); happiness by improving quality of life (Haji et al., 2011); newlineacademic performance (Prasertcharoensuk et al., 2015); prevention of drug abuse newline(Wenzel et al., 2009); prevention of unrestrained sexual behavior (Magnani et al., 2005); newlineHIV prevention (Bova et al., 2008); reduction of suicidal tendency (LaFromboiseand newlineHoward-Pitney, 1995) etc. in individuals. Life skills development improves the school newlineenvironment by solving educational and school problems (Maryam et al., 2011). newlineDeveloping life skills helps young people to defend themselves from a variety of insecure newlinefamilies and social environments (United Nations Children s Fund, 2012; Zolkoski and newlineBullock, 2012). Life skills programs help young people with disabilities to learn the skills newlinethey need to thrive, live with others, and progress in a diverse society (Kingsnorth et al., newline2007). So, life skills development not only supports regular students but, it also assists newlinespecial children by improving unique abilities and ability to negotiate their daily life newlineproblems or challenges.
