Dual energy x ray absorptiometry DXA And quantitative ultrasonography qus In evaluation of osteoporosis and Texture analysis of trabecular bone A comparative study

Abstract

newlineOsteoporosis is a major health problem in India and in many other newlineparts of the world Osteoporosis can result in diminished quality of life newlinedisability and death Hip and other fractures are a destructive consequence of newlineosteoporosis Each year in the United States 15 million osteoporotic newlinefractures occur 300 000 of which are hip fracture Other typical fractures are newlinethose of the vertebrae spine and forearm wrist newlineBone mineral density BMD is the most useful predictor of newlinefracture risk by far accounting 70 of variance in bone strength However newlinebone strength is not only depending on bone mass but also on the internal newlinetrabecular bone structure During ageing the bone mass is always reduced newlineand sometimes this loss increases due to osteoporosis In this case the newlinetrabecular architecture is strongly modified which reduces the biomechanical newlinecompetence To study this architecture at the scale of the trabecular thickness newlinetwo techniques are available histomorphometry and radiography newline newline
