Abstract
Contemporary trends in analytical chemistry are towards the
newlinesimplification and compactness of sample preparation, as well as the
newlineminimization of organic solvent uses. In view of this, several novel
newlineextraction techniques have been developed in order to reduce the analyses
newlinestep, increase the sample throughput and to improve the quality and the
newlinesensitivity of analytical methods. One of the emerging technique is solidphase
newlineextraction (SPE). The solid-phase extraction method has been
newlinedeveloped for the determination of nine polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs)
newlineand sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by gas
newlinechromatography with mass spectrometry confirmation in mineral
newlineoil/waste oil and river water samples. The efficiency of SPE of these
newlinePCBs and PAHs was compared with those obtained by solvent extraction
newline(liquid-liquid extraction).
newlineWater pollution presents a very critical problem facing developing
newlinecountries. The environmental monitoring of the contaminants seems
newlinenecessary to understand their sources and impacts. Among a wide variety
newlineof organic pollutants present in water, PCBs and PAHs are of particular
newlineimportance as widespread, persistent, and toxic contaminants. They are
newlineusually present at trace levels in the aquatic surfaces; therefore their
newlinedetection and control require selective and sensitive analytical
newlineprocedures. The solid-phase extraction (SPE) followed by the gaschromatography
newlinecoupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) are the most
newlinecommonly used techniques for their analyses in water. Thesis objectives
newlineare focused on the development of new analytical methods for the
newlineextraction and analyses of these two families of pollutants present in
newlinesurface water.The water samples were studied from Godavari River,
newlineNanded, Maharahtra. The new method showed practical environmental
newlineand economical advantages in terms of sample preparation time,
newlinesimplicity, reduction in solvent use, and cost and is particularly suitable
newlinefor routine applications requiring a high sample throughput.
