Abstract
The research provides insights into the extent to which macro factors influence corporate water
newlinemanagement practices in different countries. Based on available literature five factors were
newlineidentified as possible key macro drivers of corporate water management practices.
newline(i) None of these factors influenced behavior of laggard companies in the below
newlineaverage quintiles of results.
newline(ii) Water management practices of average companies were influenced by the level of
newlinearidity in a country.
newline(iii) Level of extreme weather events was negatively related to the quality of water
newlinemanagement practices.
newline(iv) Water management practices of leading companies above average were influenced
newlineby aridity, extreme weather events and population growth rates.
newline
newlineIt is clear, therefore that governments need to differentiate policy between the identified types
newlineof companies if they are to improve water management practices through macro considerations.
newlineThe results indicate design of a successful water management policy to be contingent upon
newlineexisting quality of water management practices.
newline For average companies governments can mix direct legislation to control management practices
newlinewith informational awareness policies in relation to aridity. Leaders can be encouraged through
newlineself regulation and building awareness of population growth and aridity.
newline With knowledge gained about the significant macro factors, companies operating across
newlinemultiple countries have the potential to pick and mix the motivational drivers, some of which,
newlinesuch as extreme weather events and virtual water embodied in products appear to need
newlineconsiderable rethinking if they are to improve water management performance in this regard.
newlineThe results and discussion indicate how governments can channel their water management
newlinepolicies towards the different contingent settings faced by the slow average and leading
newlinecompanies.
