Abstract
Water pollution is a great threat to the environment and human beings.
newlineDue to the growing population and need, the usage of plastics has increased
newlineday by day in the world. All the conventional metal parts of machines,
newlineautomobiles, and various manufacturing, packing industries and domestic
newlineproducts are replaced by various types of plastics. Hence, the production of
newlinevarious plastic materials leads, and the used plastics are discharged as waste
newlineeverywhere in the environment, leading to microplastic pollution. The
newlinedisposal of plastics into water bodies leads to contamination of water bodies.
newlineSurface and groundwater are majorly contaminated by microplastics and are
newlinepresent everywhere in the environment such as in the atmosphere, soil and
newlinewastewater. In general, microplastics are defined as less than 5mm in size and
newlineit is classified into two types of primary and secondary based on the nature of
newlineorigin. This also acts as a carrier for other pollutants such as organic
newlinecontaminants, microorganisms and heavy metal ions. Microplastics are a great
newlinethreat to marine organisms and recent studies proved that these tiny particles
newlineare consumed by human beings. The various types of microplastics that are
newlinecommonly found in the environment are polyethylene terephthalate,
newlinepolyamide, polyethylene, polystyrene, and polypropylene. These plastics
newlinediffer in size, shape and density based on the degradation of larger plastics
newlineand environmental factors. Filtration is an efficient technique for the removal of contaminants from water in which the membranes were used as a medium due to their
newlinehigher efficiency. In general, the membranes used for filtration are made of
newlinesynthetic polymers and are non-biodegradable
