dc.description.abstractAssociation of adiponectin and leptin were found to be more pronounced with the measures of central obesity i.e. WHR and WC. Central obesity should also be considered as a marker for assessment of metabolic syndrome like diabetes. The levels of these adipocytokines were found to be influenced by family history of diabetes. Association of adiponectin and leptin was more evident in diabetic patients with associated complications of HTN and CVD. VAI reveals association with altered lipid profile and adipocytokine profile indicating visceral adiposity is associated with altered adipokine profile. newline newlineDiabetic patients on Insulin + drugs revealed low adiponectin which inturn may have resulted in higher fasting glucose, elevated lipid profile and higher HOMA-IR. Thus low adiponectin levels were found to associate with glucose and lipid homeostasis. However in many patients low level of adiponectin persisted despite medications which reveal limitations of oral hypoglycemic agents. newline newlineLow level of adiponectin was found to affect markers of glycemia in non-diabetic and diabetic patients. However in diabetic patients the effect of drugs may have masked the effect of low levels of adiponectin on lipid and glycemic. Leptin levels were found to influence serum LDL levels in non-diabetic and diabetic patients. Hence Serum adipokines are associated with metabolic variables of lipid profile and to markers of insulin resistance in non-diabetic and diabetic patients. Taking into consideration the above findings there is a need of nutraceutical supplementation to improve the adipokine balance. newline newline
