Effectiveness of Individual and Group Career Counselling Techniques on Career Maturity of Higher Secondary School Students

Abstract

Career maturity is the key factor of choosing an appropriate career by an individual at school level. Career mature individuals can make informed career decision. Career maturity helps in matching of suitable candidate with suitable career or vocation. It eradicates the stagnation and wastage of time, money and human resources. It leads to use of maximum human resources in the development of the nation and lower the chance of drop out from the job. All this can be possible by using career counselling techniques at school level. It provides a platform where students solve their career related problems. Career counselling also helps in enhancing career maturity of the students and make them enable to take informed career decisions. Hence, the present study is aimed to find the effectiveness of individual and group career counselling on career maturity of higher secondary school students in relation to their parenting style and occupational aspiration. The sample of the study was 60 higher secondary school students of a government school of Garhwa district, Jharkhand. The research design of the study was pre-test post-test control group design of quasi experimental study. Tool used for data collection were Career Maturity Inventory, Parenting Style Scale and Occupational Aspiration Scale. Data analysis has been done by employing mean, median, SD, t-test, ANCOVA and two-way ANCOVA in the present study. Findings of the study revealed that both individual and group career counselling had significant effect in developing career maturity of higher secondary school students. No significant relative effect of individual and group career counselling on career maturity of higher secondary school students was revealed. Further findings showed that parenting style had significant effect in developing career maturity but had no interaction effect of career counselling techniques and parenting style on career maturity of higher secondary school students.
