Augmenting Yield and Quality of Indian Mustard Brassica Juncea L through Nitrogen Scheduling Coupled with Zinc and Boron Fertilization

Abstract

ABSTRACT newlineField experiments were conducted during the rabi season at N. E. Borlaug Crop newlineResearch Centre of GBPUAT, Pantnagar (290 N, 79029E and at an altitude of 243.83 m) to newlinestudy the effect of nitrogen schedules, coupled with zinc and boron fertilizations on growth newlineparameters, yield attributes, yield, quality, energy balance and economics of Indian mustard. newlineThe experiment consisting of 12 treatments (T1: N at 30, 30, 30, 30 Kg/ha at 15, 30, 45, 60 newlineDAS respectively, T2: N at 30, 30, 30Kg/ha at 15, 30, 45 DAS respectively, T3: N at 30, newline60, 30Kg/ha at 15, 30, 45 DAS respectively, T4: N at 30, 30, 30, 30 Kg/ha at 0, 15, 30, 45 newlineDAS respectively, T5: N at 30, 30, 30 Kg/ha at 0, 15, 30 DAS respectively, T6 : T1+Zn+B, newlineT7: T2+Zn+B, T8: T3+Zn+B, T9: T4+Zn+B, T10: T5+Zn+B, T11: RDF (NPK), T12: newlineRDF(NPK)+ Zn+ B was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) taking newlinethree replications. newlineThe plant height, dry matter per plant at various growth stages, the number of newlinebranches per plant, and the number of siliquae per plant remained significantly higher in T8 newline(N at 30, 60, 30 Kg/ha at 15, 30, 45DAS respectively+ Zn+ B). The Fv/Fm value did not newlinediffer significantly among the various treatments during both the year of study. The activity newlineof urease and dehydrogenase enzymes increased according to the nitrogen dose applied just newlinebefore recording the observation. Yield attributes like the number of siliquae per plant and newlinenumber of seeds per siliqua increased significantly with application of Zn at 5 Kg and B at newline1 Kg per ha. The seed, biological and oil yields were significantly more in T8 during both newlinethe years of study. The fatty acid profile and glucosinolate contents in seed did not differ newlinesignificantly among the various treatments during both the years of study. T7 (N at 30, 30, newline30Kg/ha at 15, 30, 45 DAS respectively + Zn + B) was found to be the most energy newlineefficient treatment. newlineThe results of the field trials revealed that the application of nitrogen in three splits newlinei.e., 30, 60 and 30 kg/ha at 15, 30 and 45 DAS coupled with Zn and B improved growth newlineparameters, yield attributes, yield, nutrient uptake and economic return of Indian mustard, newlineand shall be recommended against the traditional nutrient management practiced by the newlinefarming community. newline
