Effect Welding Environment on the Weldability of Dissimilar Brass and Aluminum Friction Stir Weld Joints

Abstract

Friction stir welding (FSW) technique is one of the most eminent techniques for similar as well newlineas dissimilar joining of materials. The solid-state joining nature of FSW process significantly newlineimproves the metallurgical and mechanical properties of the weld joint. The most important newlinebenefit of this technique is to weld all ductile materials such as aluminum (Al), zinc (Zn) and newlinecopper (Cu) etc. FSW is utilized to join dissimilar metals which is practically unweldable by newlinefusion welding process, dissimilar joining significantly reduces the overall manufacturing cost newlineof the product. Fusion welding of Al/Cu is difficult due to huge difference in their melting newlinetemperature, resulting in severe oxidation and dangerous spattering during welding. Defects newlineformed in the fusion welding due to higher heat input are significantly reduced in FSW. In newlineaddition, the low welding temperature of FSW produces high quality dissimilar weld joints. newlineFSW is also utilized to weld the materials in different joint configurations such as lap and butt newlinejoints newline
