A customized approach for improving security and energy efficiency during offloading in mobile cloud computing

Abstract

In recent years, mobile computing became the inevitable technology to access almost all resources in the web. With the rapid development in the field of cloud computing technology and mobile computing, the Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) is emerging in the fastest manner. Many fields of applications of MCC such as mobile health, mobile learning and mobile commerceare becoming more popular. As the mobile devices are very limited in size, processing power and energy, it is very difficult to run processes like face matching algorithm in the mobile devices itself. In traditional MCC, these complex tasks can be offloaded to cloud, and the cloud server will execute these tasks on behalf of mobile devices and will return the result. At the same time, it is very difficult to handle the security related aspects and energy efficiency in mobile devices. Though many of the solutions are proposed, they used either encryption algorithm or message Digest/ Hashing based algorithms to insist either confidentiality or integrity. So, the objectives of the proposed research focus mainly on enhancing security and improving energy efficiency in the mobile devices by the combined approach of encryption and hashing techniques. In order to improve security while offloading, a secured offloading algorithm is proposed initially. In this work, a combination of Triple Digital Encryption Standard (3DES) and Message Digest (MD5) algorithm were used. In this method, the offloaded thread is added with hash value generated from the MD5 algorithm and appended with the message. newline
