The electrical energy demand has grown significantly with the rapid increase needs of consumers and industries. The distribution of quality power to the consumers with the utilization of available resources will concern the financial and environmental factors. In recent years, the power electronics is integrated with the power system to distribute the quality power to the consumers. But, these power electronic loads are drawing a non-sinusoidal currents from the source and cause harmonic distortion which leads to deteriorate the power quality. newline newlineThe harmonics produced on the source side of the system have a significant impact on the power quality of the transmission system. While there are numerous advantages to introducing power converters into the power grid on a wide scale, it is critical to conduct a comprehensive examination of the harmonics created by these circuits and their effects on the power system. A survey of the literature reveals that much research has been done in the modelling of these devices for power quality improvement. However, more work has to be done on the development of power electronic-based inverter circuits and their power quality management techniques. newline newlineThis thesis addresses the power quality improvement of a single-phase utility grid using modified thirteen level inverter based Shunt Active Power Filter (SAPF). The switched capacitor based modified thirteen level boost inverter uses a single DC source of low voltage magnitude and five switched capacitor arrangements to achieve self- balanced thirteen level output voltages. Moreover, the charging and voltage balancing of capacitor is achieved by proper switching sequence control in a series, through which boosted inverter output voltage levels are obtained. Compare with the traditional H- bridge newline
