Effectiveness of Hands on Activities on Achievement Self Efficacy and Engagement in Science among Middle School Students

Abstract

Teaching learning aims at bringing holistic and maximal development of students. Science newlineEducation should be framed that way, so it enables the students to solve their problem and newlineinculcate the power of decision making with the help of scientific attitude. Since science is more newlinethat about theories, it touches every practical corner of life. For e.g.: health and diseases, newlineagriculture, industry, growth of reproduction as well as environment. Hands-on activities let the newlinestudents to have concrete learning experience and keeping them actively engaged and involved newlinewith all their senses in the process of learning. newlineThis study titled Effectiveness of hands -on activities on achievement, self efficacy and newlineengagement in science among middle school studentsand#8223; aims to investigate the extent to which newlineteaching science through hands-on activities make the difference. It also examines the effect of newlinehands-on activities on achievement, self- efficacy and engagement in science. The study also newlineconsider the factors gender, access to various platforms of media like Google, You tube, e books newlineetc to excess knowledge and role of motherand#8223;s qualification in studentsand#8223; achievement in science. newlineThis study follows quasi experimental, non equivalent pre test post test group design. The newlineintervention includes 40 hands-on activities based on six chapters from science text book of newlinegrade VIII .The experiment was conducted with grade VIII students in Army Public School, newlineGaya. newlineThe present study consists of 72 students .The convenient sampling method has been used newlineto select the samples. This is a form of non probability sampling. Intact classroom was newlinechosen by the researcher for the study. The two sections A and B were taken as experimental and control group randomly. The Experimental group had 37 students newlineincluding 17 girls and 20 boys whereas the Control group had 35 students including 16 newlinegirls and 19 boys. newlineThe tools used in the study were, i) Science Achievement Test (SAT) ii) Science Self- efficacy newlineScale (SSES) iii) Science Engagement Scale (SES).
