Mucilages are most commonly used adjuvant in pharmaceutical preparations. Mucilages contain hydrophilic molecules, which can combine with water to form viscous solutions or gels. Mucilage swells to form highly viscous solutions or dispersions in aqueous media. They used as suspending agent, emulsifier and as release retardant in many pharmaceutical formulations because of its high viscous nature and of their high swelling ratio. newlineNatural polymers like gum and Mucilages are non-toxic in nature, easily biodegradable and cost effective. Various methods were tried to isolate mucilage. These methods of isolation are simple, economical. newlineThere are no reports on isolation and characterization of mucilage of Cordia gharaf, Bombax ceiba, Acacia leucophloea, Cocolasia esculanta. Hence, the present study was focused on isolation of mucilage from Cordia gharaf, Bombax ceiba, Acacia leucophloea, Cocolasia esculanta. Characterized for its morphological characteristics, identification by chemical tests, Solubility, pH, swelling index. The isolated mucilage showed positive results for Molisch s test and Ruthenium red test which indicated presence of carbohydrate and mucilage. The suitability of mucilage for sustained release formulation due to its swelling index and viscous nature and it can be easily converted as tablet dosage form due to its compressibility, flow ability. newlineTrazodone hydrochloride is an antidepressant chemically unrelated to tricyclic, tetra cyclic, or other known antidepressant agents. Trazadone is used primarily in the treatment of mental depression or depression / anxiety disorders. As the conventional doses release the Trazodone hydrochloride in just minutes and therefore the therapeutic concentration are maintained for a short period of time generating a need for administration of another dose. newlineTherefore an attempt was made to maintain the therapeutic concentration for longer period of time. This was achieved by developing sustained or control release drug delivery system. These sustained release matrix table
