Abstract
Analysis of Climatic Risks, Vulnerability and
newlineAdaptation Strategies for Disaster Resilience in
newlineUttarakhand Himalayas: A Study of Almora District
newlineEver increasing propensity of disasters and lack of appropriate climate sensitive
newlinedevelopmental policy frameworks is a major concern; as such policies can help
newlineminimize the impact of hydro-climatic disasters for developing nations like India in
newlinegeneral, and more particularly in the sensitive Himalayan regions. In depth
newlineunderstanding of sustainability and its mainstreaming into Disaster Risk Reduction
newlinetaking along Climate Change Adaptation in developmental plans can help optimize the
newlineallocation of resources towards the protection of life and assets.
newlineOver the last few years, Indian Himalayan Region is observing huge increase in
newlineclimatic extreme events and it is expected that deaths and morbidity will only increase in
newlineyears to come. We need people-centric preventive approach to disaster risk and
newlinedisaster risk reduction practices should be multi-hazard and multi-sectoral, inclusive of
newlineand accessible to all the disadvantaged sections of our society.
newlineClimate specific areas of concern include issues of extreme heat, changing
newlinerainfall patterns, droughts, depleting groundwater, glacial melt, sea level rise, agriculture
newlineand food security, energy security, water scarcity, health hazards, displacement of
newlinepopulation, conflicts, extreme weather events etc. Year 2019 and 2020, have observed,
newlinehuge economic and human costs, due to extreme climatic conditions and incidences,
newlineglobally.
newlineTime has come to search for an integrated approach with inclusion of all
newlinestakeholders at policy/plan level, implementers of projects/schemes,
newlinecorporate/industries at localized project level and the communities at large, to
newlinesynergistically develop strategies for managing disasters collectively. Policies made at
newlinecentral govt. level may not always answer the local needs and therefore there is a need
newlineto study the district/local level policies and suggest them integration tools for ...
