Abstract
Globally, as the demand for concrete as construction material
newlineincreases, the demand for Portland cement also increases. Enormous amount of
newlineCO2 is emitted into the atmosphere during the production of cement. Since there
newlineis a need to reduce the impact of CO2 emission, several efforts are in progress to
newlinereduce the use of Portland cement in order to address the global warming issues.
newlineGeopolymer concrete is one of the alternative technologies to reduce the impact
newlineof CO2 emission. Since no cement is used in this concrete, it is also known as
newline No-cement concrete. The aim of the research is to evaluate the flexural
newlinebehaviour of Geopolymer concrete beam with different types of fibres viz.,
newlineAramid, Basalt, Carbon and E-Glass Fibre mats. Fibres were wrapped in tension
newlineside (soffit wrapping) and the results were compared with the reinforced
newlineconcrete beams. The material used for the preparation of geopolymer concrete
newlinebeam were sodium hydroxide, sodium silicate, Class F flyash, fine aggregate,
newlinecoarse aggregate, naphthalene based super plasticizer. A total of 78 beams were
newlinecast and tested in this research. This includes 27 Geopolymer Reinforced
newlineconcrete beams, 24 Geopolymer Reinforced Pre-cracked concrete beams and 27
newlineReinforced Cement Concrete beams with various wrapping schemes. For ease,
newlinethe entire beams were classified into 3 schemes viz., Scheme B-I beams, Scheme
newlineB-II beams and Scheme B-III beams. Scheme B-I beams comprise Geopolymer
newlineReinforced Concrete Beams. Scheme B-II beams comprise Geopolymer
newlineReinforced Concrete Pre-cracked Beams and Scheme B-III beams comprise
newlineReinforced Cement Concrete beams. For identification, a six-notation
newlineabbreviation GPRCxyi is followed for Scheme B-I beams. Here, GPRC stands
newlinefor Geopolymer Reinforced Concrete, xy stands for CB, AF, BF, CF and GF,
newlineand i ranges from 1 to 2. For example, GPRCCB stands for Geopolymer
newlineReinforced Concrete Control Beam and GPRCAF1 stands for Geopolymer
newlineReinforced Concrete beam wrapped with one layer of Aramid Fibre mat.
newlineSimilarly, GPRCBF1 stands for Geopolymer Reinforced Concrete Beam
newlinewrapped with one layer of Basalt fibre mat and so on.
