A study to assess venous thromboembolism risk among corporate employees frequently flying with a view to develop need based guidelines on venous thromboembolism prevention in selected Indian multinational companies

Abstract

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a global health concern with substantial morbidity and mortality. It is often asymptomatic and underdiagnosed, leading to long-term complications and reduced survival. newlineBackground: The annual incidence of venous thromboembolism in the general population is estimated to be about 1 per 1000, however, it should be noted that much of the published data are derived from patients who present with symptoms at medical institutions. newlineObjectives: The research objective taken is to assess venous thromboembolism risk among corporate employees frequently flying in selected Indian multinational companies and also to identify the signs and symptoms of venous thromboembolism development post newlinetravel to develop a need-based guidelines on prevention of venous thromboembolism. newlineMethodology: In this study, the researcher had adopted an exploratory descriptive design to identify risk category of Indian corporate employees exposed to frequent air travel due to job assignment. newlineResult: Out of total 165 corporate employees frequently flying in selected Indian multinational companies; 38 (23.03%) were at High Risk of VTE development, 79 (47.88%) were at Medium Risk and 48 (29.09%) were at Low Risk and none were at No Risk for development of VTE. newlineConclusion: Venous thromboembolism is often an ignored phenomenon especially in case of normal people because we walk and during walking our calf muscle contract and relax causing venous emptying and refilling. However, this does not happen in case we are travelling by flight and sitting in crouched position for hours. If this situation persists in case of frequent travellers, then that is really a matter of concern. The need-based guidelines video prepared after conducting the gap analysis of the knowledge level of the study participants, was hopeful to enhance the insight and aware the public about the importance of taking some simple steps that could help in prevention of venous thromboembolism among frequent flyers. newline newline
