Abstract
Anaesthetic drugs can be credited with the fame of enabling
newlineand driving advances in modern surgical procedures. With such
newlinerapid advances, concurrent with advances in anesthetic drugs,
newlinesurgical handicraft had been developing at an exponential pace.
newlineWhile such growth has been progressing, many additional
newlineeffects have been desirable for surgeons to prevent morbidity and to
newlineease the surgical procedure as well as help in recovery of the
newlinepatient. These are neuromuscular blockers and they have
newlinerevolutionized the general anesthesia.
newlineThe first of the kind was d-tubocurarine, followed by
newlinesuccinylcholine. While skeletal muscle relaxants are not new to
newlinemankind, they have been used as arrow poison in the ancient days to
newlineparalyze and kill the target. In modern times, the pharmacology has
newlinebeen extensively studied so that the same can be applied to surgical
newlineprocedures. However, these initial prototypic drugs are not used
newlinecurrently due to the availability of better drugs with improved
newlinesafety margin1.
newlineNeuromuscular blockers offer several advantages
newlineintraoperatively. They facilitate the performance of longer-duration
newlinesurgeries and obliterate voluntary and reflex movements.
newline
newlineIn the literature, previous investigators have analysed the
newlineonset of action, duration and other parameters. Bouju et al., (2017)
newlinehave compared atracurium and cisatracurium in critically ill
newlinepatients2. Mellinghoff et al., (1996) have compared their
newlineneuromuscular blocking ability3. Nogueira et al., (2010) have
newlineinvestigated their hemodynamic effects with the use of
newlinediphenhydramine and cimetidine4. However, there is lacuna in the
newlineliterature regarding simultaneous measurement of hemodynamics
newlineand pharmacodynamics of these drugs. Hence this study was
