Abstract
newlineAging is a complex biological process in living organisms that results in gradual deterioration of
newlinephysiological and metabolic machineries as a result of maturity. We intend to characterize this
newlineprocess at the gene expression levels using publicly available open-access data sets to investigate
newlinethe candidate genes involved in the regulation of the phenomena in both human and Arabidopsis.
newlineResearch design and Objectives
newlineExtensive literature survey has done for identification of candidate genes involved in dental and
newlineskeletal aging in humans. We considered genes involved in odntogensis, skeletal development,
newlineand aging and related GO terms and from these GO term vve manually identified a group of
newlinegenes involved in aging process in our first part of analysis. All these group of genes has been
newlineanalyzed using different bioinformatics tools to identify candidate genes involved in aging.
newlineHowever due to complexity of analysis and rapid development of huge microarray data we
newlineconsidered to use gene expression microarray data for further analysis using D-chip and later by
newlineR Aroma package. The human gene expression arrays were obtained primarily from Gene
newlineExpression Omnibus (GEO) and the Array Express for identification and characterization of
newlineaging related candidate genes. We selected top 200 genes showing significant up and down
newlineregulation (p lt 0,05 and fold change gt 2.5) of which 185 were chosen for further comparative
newlineanalysis. Network-level visualization and pathway mappings indicated that 185 candidate genes
newlineare identified in aging in human beings. In addition, annotations of the sub-sets of genes were
newlinedone for insights into their biochemical and biological involvement in human beings. For
newlineexample, over-representation of enzymes belonging to class of kinases, hydrolases, transferases,
newlineand ligases families, and the enrichment of pathways that over-lapped with pathological
newlineconditions in human beings indicated the similarities with disease state of cells. The Arabidopsis
newlinehomologue of all 185 human genes has bee
