Health issues and concerns of women in detention in the jails a study of Haryana state

Abstract

The present research examines the health issues and concerns faced by women in detention in jails in the state of haryana. The objectives aimed to (1) assess the status of various dimensions of health (physical, mental, and social) among female inmates; (2) examine the reproductive health and menstrual hygiene management practices adopted by female inmates; (3) assess the facilities for the promotion of health, education, and skill development of female inmates in jails; and (4) describe the scope of social work intervention in jails. The research was conducted with a mixed-methods approach consisting of quantitative and qualitative aspects. Interview schedules for female inmates (convicts and under trials) were prepared as part of the quantitative aspect. Stakeholders, including jail officials and staff, were also interviewed to gain more insights about the facilities (healthcare, education, recreation) available for female inmates inside the jail premises. Narratives were recorded from female inmates as part of the qualitative aspect. The adopted approach aimed to identify areas for improvement, review current policies, and suggest social work interventions to address the health issues and concerns of female inmates in jails. newline
