Pre Clinical Validation of Anti Inflammatory and Anti Arthritic Potential of Siddha Poly Herbal Formulation Avuri Karpam

Abstract

Siddha medicines are more effective in treating chronic diseased conditions. Numerous formulations are mentioned in Siddha classical literature for treating arthritis. Among them, a poly herbal formulation Avuri Karpam (AK) has mentioned in the Siddha classical literature for treating arthritis (Keelvatham). AK has been selected for the study to prove the safety and efficacy for the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) in animal model as pre-clinical study. According to Siddha principles Vali azhal keelvayu increase due to the derangement of vatham and pittham humour. Suvai (Taste) and Thanmai (Character) of the drug AK neutralizes the humour vatham and pittham in the body. Purgation normalises the humour vatham as well. Ingredients of AK have purgative action. So this poly herbal formulation may be effective in the treatment of RA. Ingredients of AK were identified. After getting an authentication from experts AK was prepared as per Siddha literature. It was subjected for several studies to know the potency of the drug. The microbial load, aflatoxins and pesticide levels were analysed for AK and the results were found in WHO permissible limits. Results of powder microscopy analysis revealed the good quality of the plant raw materials. CONCLUSION: In this present research work Siddha poly herbal formulation Avuri Karpam (AK) was selected and investigated for its standardization, toxicological and pharmacological studies. From the aforementioned results of standardization procedures and toxicity studies that the Siddha poly herbal formulation AK is a safer drug for treating patient s illness. People have started to look back their traditional science which the natural atmosphere dwells. In conclusion, the presents study clearly highlights AK has potent analgesic, acute and chronic anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic effects which has several therapeutic benefits with cost effective. Thus, it is concluded that AK is a potent anti-arthritic drug which can be used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
