A Study of Nown Phrase in English for Science and Technology with Special Reference to Mumbai University

Abstract

The present thesis is a detailed study of Noun Phrase as one of the important aspects of the science and technological text. It aims to examine the complexity of Noun Phrases in selected texts prescribed by University of Mumbai for engineering students during the specific period from 2012 to 2015. The present study is purely the part of English for Science and Technology branch which is the distinguished sub category of English for Specific Purposes. It also strongly focuses on English for Specific Purposes in the introductory part. The thesis is mainly divided into five chapters. The first chapter introduces English for Specific Purposes in detail. It is devoted to the history of ESP, its tree diagram of branches like EAP and EST. It aims to include the detailed study of English for Science and Technology, aims and objectives of the research, hypothesis, justification of selection of the research area, literature reviews, collection of data, scope and limitations of the research work and methodology to be used. The second chapter examines the importance of NPs in the sentence pattern, Formation of NPs, Constituents of NPs, Types of the NPs and Characteristics of NPs. Simple NPs and Complex NPs and NPs in English for Science and Technology (EST) with its analysis are differentiated by following some examples. newline
