Abstract
The current study, which is entitled as and#8213;Hydrogeochemical study of groundwater in selected
newlineareas of Balurghat Subdivision, West Bengal, India and probabilistic health risk assessmentand#8214;
newlineconcentrated on the effects on human health of the groundwater situation in the Balurghat
newlineSubdivision in the Dakshin Dinajpur district of the Indian state of West Bengal. Lack of
newlinegroundwater and health issues data of this area due to contamination in groundwater catalyze
newlineto undertake this study. Not only have that, this study also provided a clear picture of
newlinesuitability of the water quality for irrigation purposes and drinking water quality of the
newlinegroundwater of the study area which were not properly investigated. This area is very much
newlinebackward due to unhealthy economic condition which leads the most of the local peoples to
newlinetake drinking water without any treatment. So, this study may help policy makers to develop
newlinenew policies.
newlineThe first chapter focused on the prominent aspects of groundwater and provided a broad
newlineintroduction to the characteristics of water and water resources. Aquifer rock composition,
newlinegroundwater velocity, and other variables affect the character of groundwater. Both human
newlineand geogenic activities encourage the leaching of pollutants into groundwater systems.
newlineFluoride and iron contamination in groundwater is a burning issue not only in the state of
newlineWest Bengal, but various states in India continuously fighting with this problem and its
newlineimpact on human health. Generally, western districts of West Bengal are heavily affected by
newlinethis type of contamination in groundwater due to high chances of rock-water interaction. But
newlinefluoride and iron contamination problem in the Garo-Rajmahal trap which mostly comprises
newlinewith alluvial type of soil is comparatively newer and not well reported. The minerals like
newlinefluoride and iron etc. are quite beneficial for human health but excess presence in
newlinegroundwater which is heavily used for drinking and irrigation makes an unwelcomed effect
newlinexix
newlineon health of this study area. Following
