Performance of Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete Beams with Sustainable Waste Materials

Abstract

Concrete mixture is the most widely used material for construction. It is versatile and possesses desirable engineering properties which can be molded into any shape with the help of by producing using cost-effective materials. In developing countries like India, sand bearing problems is forced every day. Day by day the demand for sand is increasing, nowadays manufacturing sand from crushed rock with proper gradation is used as a fine aggregate. In this regard, Construction firms are subjected to strenuous pressure in the need to find alternative natural sand. Now the spot light is focused on the possible replacement of fine aggregates with equally tenable materials such as quarry dust and marble dust. The present investigation falls under the category of introducing the novel concept of partial substitution or possible total replacement of the conventional concrete ingredients with equivalent materials derived from the industrial waste dumps. In the first stage, as a preliminary investigation, the mechanical and physical characteristics of marble dust and quarry dust were found out for various proportions from 20% to 80% replacement with sand in terms of workability, flexural strength, split tensile strength and compressive strength. In the second phase, glass fiber in various proportions of 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% and 2% is added along with 20% of marble and quarry dust to study the performance of concrete using glass fiber. Young s modulus of elasticity of the concrete with and without glass fiber was also found out. A total of 270 specimens were tested in the phase. In third phase, durability studies such as sulphuric acid attack, hydrochloric attack, and RCPT were conducted on conventional samples and optimized samples with marble dust and quarry dust replaced concrete. And also, for optimized samples with quarry dust and marble dust with glass fibers.
