Abstract
Iron deficiency is by far the first cause of nutritional anaemia worldwide. A large portion of iron deficiency is preventable with appropriate and timely intervention. Anaemia has been a prevalent health issue in India with over 70% children. Nearly 73 million children below the age of three (79%) suffer from varying degrees of anaemia. Pand#257;and#7751;and#7693;u is supposed to be the nearest co-related entity to anaemia characterized by Pitta
newlinePradhand#257;na Vyand#257;dhi of Rasavaha Srotasa, Pand#257;and#7751;and#7693;utand#257;, Akand#347;ikuand#7789;a and#346;otha, Hand#7771;dspanda and Daurbalya. Saand#7749;tarpaand#7751;a is a treatment of Rasa Pradoand#7779;aja disorders and Pand#257;and#7751;and#7693;u being one of them; it can be implied to patients suffering from Pand#257;and#7751;and#7693;u. Hence the present comparative study of Elemental iron supplements and bio iron i.e. iron of natural origin using Saand#7749;tarpaand#7751;a Cikitsa with Falgu (Aand#7749;jand#299;ra), Kand#7771;and#7779;and#7751;a Drand#257;kand#347;a (Manukand#257;) and Kharjura combination was undertaken in the management of Pand#257;and#7751;and#7693;u (iron deficiency anaemia) in children.Studying the Saand#7749;tarpaand#7751;a and Pand#257;and#7751;and#7693;uhara effect of Falgu (Aand#7749;jand#299;ra), Kand#7771;and#7779;and#7751;a Drand#257;kand#347;and#257; (Manukand#257;) and Kharjand#363;ra as a combination in Pand#257;nand#7693;u (iron deficiency anaemia) The present study was designed as a randomized controlled comparative trial, consisting of 160 diagnosed cases (children) of Pand#257;and#7751;and#7693;u (Iron Deficiency Anaemia), where one arm was of the trial interventional combination and another arm was of the controlled drug, iron ascorbate, a commonly used iron formulation, to treat anemia.
newlineThe control group was given iron ascorbate solution in a dose of 6 mg of elemental iron
newlineper kg per dose rounded to the nearest multiple of 10 mg of elemental iron, once a day early morning, empty stomach for 30 days.
newlineThe trial group was asked to consume a freshly prepared paste containing Falgu (Aand#7749;jand#299;ra), Kand#7771;and#7779;and#7751;a Drand#257;kand#347;and#257; (Manukand#257;) and Kharjand#363;ra, 10 grams each, soaked overnight in water, for the span of 30 days.
