Abstract
Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN) is the key initiating factor for the
newlinedevelopment of diabetic foot ulcers and the most common cause of lower limb amputation.
newlineClinical or subclinical neuropathy has been identified in nearly two-thirds of diabetic
newlinepatients. All patients with DM can develop neuropathy, with its prevalence increasing with
newlinethe duration of DM. Diabetic neuropathy is defined as The presence of symptoms
newlineand/or signs of peripheral nerve dysfunction in people with diabetes after exclusion of
newlineother causes.
newlineDiabetic Peripheral Neuropathy is predominantly sensory neuropathy or sensory
newlinemotor neuropathy. Glycemic control and duration of diabetes are regarded as the main
newlinereasons of DPN along with other factors like raised triglyceride levels, hypertension,
newlineobesity, and smoking.
newlineIn Ayurveda, symptoms of DPN can be seen in poorvarupa and upadrava of Prameha
newlineespecially Madhumeha. It can be further compared to that of Raktavrutha Vata, a condition
newlinewhen Vata gets Avruta by Rakta, all the symptoms of DPN is seen. There are symptoms
newlinelike excessive pain associated with a burning sensation in the area between Tvak and Mamsa,
newlineand also svayathu,raga, and formation of mandalas. Charaka has mentioned the treatment
newlinefor Raktavruthavata treatment should be in similar lines with that of Vatarakta. So along
newlinewith the treatment of Madhumeha, Vatarakta treatment also holds a vital part in treating
newlineDiabetic Peripheral Neuropathy.
newlineKand#7779;heera Dhand#257;ra (irrigation with milk) has benefits on the nervous system and Vand#257;ta-
newlinePitta disorders. Among the four types of Sveda told by Vand#257;gbhaand#7789;a, the Drava variety is
newlineindicated for vitiated Pitta and Rakta. The Koand#7779;and#7751;a Pariand#7779;eka (lukewarm irrigation) of
newlineDasamoola Ksheera (milk boiled with Dasamoola) over the entire body is indicated in
newlineVand#257;tarakta Cikitsa (treatment of gouty arthritis) with the predominance of Vand#257;ta to relieve
newlinepain.
