Abstract
This thesis examines the critical mental health issues faced by women prisoners in India, highlighting the profound impact of psychological disorders such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD, often stemming from extensive trauma. It assesses the inadequacies in mental health care within Indian prisons, despite existing legal frameworks, and underscores the need for gender-sensitive, trauma-informed care. By comparing practices in India with those in the USA and the UK, the study identifies significant gaps and suggests reforms to enhance mental health care, including comprehensive health screenings, continuous staff training, and dedicated mental health facilities. The research advocates for a humane approach that aligns with international standards, emphasizing systemic reforms to support the rehabilitation and reintegration of women prisoners into society.
