Abstract
Point of Care Testing: Early and accurate diagnosis of diseases is vital as it enables prompt and proper treatment, prevents the spread of disease in the population and minimizes the waste of resources. In-vitro diagnostic devices have played a vital role in creating a world with improved healthcare environment through advanced manufacturing
newlineprocess and a spur in globalization. However, difficulties associated with frequent
newlinevisits to clinical laboratories, prolonged time taken for obtaining results and lack of
newlineaccess to laboratory facilities in developing countries led to a new era in diagnostics
newlineknown as Point of Care Testing (POCT). Patients with diabetes mellitus represent a
newlinemajor component of chronic disease management, the majority of which is carried out through primary care (general practitioner s or family physicians). Diabetes mellitus affects an estimated 246 million people worldwide, which is expected to rise to 380 million by 2025. Every year about 7 million people develop diabetes. The long term effects of diabetes mellitus include complications of retinopathy with potential blindness, nephropathy leading to renal failure and neuropathy with risk of foot ulcers and amputation. People with diabetes are also at increased risk of cardiovascular, peripheral vascular and cerebrovascular diseases, Charcot joints, and features of autonomic dysfunction, including sexual dysfunction.
newlineLab-on-a-Chip (LOC) devices: Lab-on-a-Chip systems are a class of miniaturized analytical devices that integrate fluidics, electronics and sensors. They are capable of analyzing biochemical samples like solutions of metabolites, macromolecules, proteins, nucleic acids, or cells and viruses. Supplementary to their measuring capabilities, the Lab-on-a-Chip
newlinedevices facilitate fluidic transportation, sorting, mixing and separation of liquid
