Abstract

newline Quality play a very important role in today s manufacturing industry. Therefore the main objective of quality engineering is to design quality into each and every product and processes. Taguchi s method of optimization is a very effective approach in order to achieve this goal. In this thesis, first the Taguchi s method of optimization was applied in determining the optimal setting of controllable parameters (i.e. cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut) in single objective optimization of optimum tool flank wear width, surface roughness and roundness in turning operation of AISI 1045 steel cylindrical bars. But most of the processes have several simultaneous quality characteristics of interest. Therefore, secondly Taguchi s method of optimization along with Utility concept was applied in multi-objective optimization of these processes. For this Taguchi s L9 orthogonal array signal to noise ratios (S/N ratios), analysis of variance (ANOVA) and utility values were used with cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut as controllable factors and tool flank wear width, surface roughness and roundness are considered as main response variables in the thesis. Lastly the concept of Taguchi s method of optimization was introduced in service industry in analysis and quantification of factors affecting the success of retail outlets. Therefore, this thesis shows that the application of Taguchi method is not limited to the manufacturing sector but it can also be effectively used with other sectors like retail.
