Abstract
Antihyperlipidemic effect and antidiabetic effect of various extracts have been investigated in the present study in experimentally induced hyperlipidemia and diabetic in rats. It was our hypothesis that 1:1 ratio of extract together will show significant reduction than individual extract. It was proved from the result in comparison to all extract. Administration of atherogenic diet orally (400mg/kg cholesterol, 50mg/kg cholic acid in coconut oil) for 20 day, administration of Cholesterol diet (2% cholesterol, 1% cholic acid, 2% lard oil) for 21 days, intraperitoneal injection of triton X 100 once only at dose of 100 mg/kg to various rats significantly increased TC, TG, bad cholesterol levels, AI index, while decreased the good cholesterol levels as compared to normal rats. Similarly intraperitoneal injection of alloxan monohydrate once at the dose of 150 meg//kg to various rats significantly increased blood glucose levels along with TC and TG as compared to normal rats levels. Most extract showed highly significant decreased in serum lipid levels and blood fasting glucose levels in dose dependent manner as compared to contro! group in model. But 1:1 ratio of methanolic extract treated group showed highest beneficial effect compared to other extract treated groups in all above mentioned experimental study model. Glucomannan was isolated from the Eulophia herbacea and from previous data available; it was hypothesized that it may beneficial in preventing hyperlipidemia and diabetes mellitus. The isolates extracted from plants proved antihyperlipidemic activity and antidiabetic activity in rats. Usage of authentic and genuine herbal drug will contribute significantly to the healthcare of the human society. These therapeutic activities and toxicological data support the folklore claims of Eulophia herbacea and Lagenaria siceraria. Further there is a need to search some more isolates and lead compound from Eulophia herbacea and Lagenaria siceraria.
