Abstract
Phrasal verbs are as ancient as Old English Wycliffes Bible has
newlinemany phrasal verbs in their Old English form Shakespeare has deftly used
newlinephrasal verbs to stage his plays Phrasal verbs have undergone many changes
newlinein their form till the Modern English Period Consequently they have evolved
newlineas a fascinating feature of the English language Having simple verbs and
newlineparticles they form complex units conveying various shades of meanings
newlinePerdek Magdalena 2010 states that handling phrasal verbs have
newlinebeen a challenge for both learners and the lexicographers for centuries She
newlinealso states that even Samuel Johnson has acknowledged the possible problems
newlinethat nonnatives will meet when faced with these constructions In the Preface
newlineto the Dictionary 1755 he acknowledges that there is another kind of
newlinecomposition more frequent in our language than perhaps any other from
newlinewhich arises to foreigners the greatest difficulty Many of these
newlineconstructions as he continues appear wildly irregular being so far distant
newlinefrom the sense of the simple words that no sagacity will be able to trace the
newlinesteps by which they arrived at the present use
