Abstract
Quadcopters are generally used for surveillance in both indoor and
newlineoutdoor applications. It is difficult for the quadcopter to navigate from
newlineoutdoor to indoor due to the narrow space in the indoor application. Also
newlineQuadcopters designed with foldable arms are being used for easy of
newlinetransportation on the ground. This has paved the way for this research work.
newlineThe aim of this research is to design and develop a Quadcopter with
newlinefoldable arms not only for the ease of transportation but also mainly capable
newlineof flying in both Fold and Unfold Mode at various fold angles. This motivated
newlineto design a quadcopter with foldable arms where arms in fold mode provides
newlinemore agility as generally quadcopters with smaller arm length have, whereas
newlinearms in unfold mode provides more stability as generally quadcopters with
newlinebigger arm length have, so that same vehicle can be used for both indoor and
newlineoutdoor applications. The vehicle can be flown in fold mode in order to
newlinenavigate through narrow passages in indoor navigation and in unfold mode
newlinefor aerial photography effectively. Hence, this research approaches a smooth
newlinetransition between Flying Mode Foldable Arm Quadcopter modes both on
newlinethe ground as well as in flying conditions. It is achieved successfully through
newlinethe retraction and extension of the arms of the Quadcopter in flying mode,
newlineresulting a reduction in arm-to-arm distance. Further these agility and stability
newlineaspects are verified with Ecalc analysis software. The simulation results
newlineconfirm that improved stability in unfold mode and also improved agility in
newlinefold mode. An increase of about 4.9-km/h speed is achieved in the folded
newlinemode than in unfold mode.
