Abstract
The petroleum industry faces significant challenges due to the accumulation of tank
newlinebottom oil sludge, a complex mixture comprising oil, water, solids, and contaminants. This sludge not only diminishes the effective storage capacity of tanks but also leads to increased maintenance costs and heightened environmental risks. Addressing these issues necessitates effective management strategies to preserve the quality and consistency of stored oil for subsequent processing. Among the various methods
newlineexplored for managing tank bottom oil sludge such as chemical treatments, specialized removal equipment, and innovative techniques like bioremediation using microorganisms the choice of approach often depends on the specific physicochemical characteristics of the sludge. The study is three folded, which involves treatment of sludge through Bioremediation, Solubilization of sludge in blend of solvents and treatment with chemical additives. The study investigated the potential of in-situ bioremediation, an eco-friendly and sustainable method that utilizes naturally occurring microorganisms to break down sludge components. Researchers isolated specific bacterial strains from the sludge
newlinesamples themselves, including Pseudomonas fluorescens, Proteus vulgaris, Shigella
newlinesonnei, and Enterobacter aerogenes. These strains were then assessed for their ability
newlineto enhance the biodegradation process. The findings were highly promising, as these
newlineindigenous bacteria demonstrated exceptional efficacy, achieving a biodegradation
newlinerate exceeding 95% for the sludge components. This bioremediation strategy presents
newlinea promising and sustainable alternative to conventional methods, offering the added
newlineadvantage of minimal environmental impact. For better dissolution of sludge, Sol Sludge was introduced which comprised of blending of less toxic solvents which could be used for dissolution of sludge.
